07-03-20, Corvette's do the Squares:  In spite of some very heavy rain we managed to circle all the squares with quite a few (est. 40 Vettes) and meet at THE BAKER HOUSE for hotdogs afterward.  We thank those that attended for braving the weather, lightening, puddles, etc.  Our reception around all 3 squares was great.  The public loved it, waved, took pictures, and generally were into the 4th of July spirit.  A lotta flag waving.

06-012-20: CAT BOAT, LAKE DORA
It was an amazing adventure & we got compliments from each and everyone of the people from the group.  None of us had every gone on such an adventure so it was new to everyone.  It covered many different feelings.  There was the thrill of speed on the water & we even had a boat race.  I don’t remember who won the race but I placed at 3rd.  To steer the boat there was a stick between the passengers.  If you wanted to go right you pushed the stick forward & for a left you pulled it backwards.  The throttle was on the right side and also was a push forward & pull backwards.  It was something that one had to think about all of the time.  A sterling wheel would have been a piece of cake.  Udells furnished a 1st at CatBoat Adventures as they took their dog with them in a pouch that hung around Richards neck with their dog on his chest.  Remember the Wide World of Sports when they showed, The Thrill of Victory well that’s how we all felt after speeding back and forth across the lake.  Then there was the peaceful slow no wake ride through the Dora Canal.  We were able to see much wildlife including a gator.  The trees covered us with a full canopy & it was just picture perfect.  Due to the virus and everyone had placed different restrictions on social distancing so we split up after the CatBoat Adventure.  Some headed back home and the rest of us just went to where ever for their lunch.  Bova, Swiers & the Berthiaume’s went to One Floor Up & had an enjoyable meal together.
On the way out of the canal there was a party pontoon boat & I asked Terri to take a picture of it & insure that the phone number was in the picture.  That might just be another adventure for our club sometime in the near future

2020-05-14 Corvette Cavalcade

05-14-20, Corvette Cavalcade: As you've probably read in the Daily Sun, The Villages Regional Hospital in conjunction with the University of Florida Medical has quickly and efficiently dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic since it was first discovered/announced.  The Villages Regional Hospital Foundation has formed a "PANDEMIC PREPAREDNESS FUND to support LOCAL efforts to better prepare our community for viral outbreaks now, and in the future.  Ms. Catherine Reardon heading up this new initiative.  This cruise is to raise money for this worthy cause.  Each participant donated $30 (or more) when they registered.  These participant donations combined with a club's donation was be greatly appreciated.

We left St.Timothy's via a circuitous route to TVRH-UF HEALTH for a presentation of a check to the hospital's board chairman.  Press coverage was be provided by the DAILY SUN, Ms. Sherri Coner.  From TVRH UF HEALTH we then proceeded to the Fire Station 45 on Buena Vista (across from the Eisenhower Reg. Rec. Center) and present them with a donation to help our dedicated first responders. After the festivities we had a "parking lot get-together" at Eisenhower

7 member Vettes were "limos" for the special needs attendees at this yearly event.  The ladies acted as greeters cheering each participant as they entered the decorated party room. It is always a moving experience for everyone involved.  We dined at Mesa de Notte, one of the area's finest Italian ristorante's.

"FLIGHTLESS HONOR FLIGHT ESCORT"
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2019
WAS A TOTAL SUCCESS

Our Village Vettes Corvette Club members (pictured above) joined The Villages "Nomads" motorcycle club and the "American Legion Riders" motorcycle club to escort two buses of Veterans from Colony Cottage Recreation Center to the American Legion Post in Lady Lake. Thank you to Bob Kerfin, VVCC member and Nomad President, for inviting our club for the second year in a row. Depending on the time of the "count", we had well over 30 Corvettes from our club and as many motorcycles participate.
The route was Colony Cottage to 466A, to 441, and 466 to the American Legion post. Local law enforcement for each jurisdiction blocked every intersection to ensure the caravan was uninterrupted.

At the legion, Honor Flight "Flight Director" Liza Waters recognized each individual Veteran by name and thanked the Honor Flight staff, entertainers, volunteers, local law enforcement and escorts for their dedication and participation

06/29/19 Honor Flight Caravan

The Village Vettes Corvette Club was honored to have participated in the HONOR FLIGHT caravan from Colony Rec Center to the Legion post 347 (THE LARGEST POST IN THE NATION). The police escorts from Sumter, Lake, and Fruitland Park kept total control of the traffic situations. The NOMADS motorcycle club led the pack, followed by the VVCC followed by our Veterans. This was a "flightless" HONOR FLIGHT with a large majority of the participating Veterans in wheel chairs. In spite of the rainy weather everyone stood to honor these wonderful men. The playing of TAPS was especially moving with many in the room wiping tears away. Lamers buses allowed those veterans in need of assistance to enter and exit the buses easily. The wheelchair lifts are a work of art.

The Surprising Legal Ramifications of Having a Dashcam in Your Car

Want to make sure your mechanic isn't messing with your car? Be careful, a dashcam could actually get you in trouble too.

We've all seen the hilarious footage of a customer car being taken on a joyride by a mechanic, with the whole ordeal recorded by the customer's dashboard camera. Hapless technicians and porters flog cars, often with the dash cam right in front of them preparing to make them YouTube stars.

Are there any potential legal ramifications to the car owner for any of this? Believe it or not, yes. Here is what you need to know about your dash cam, from a legal perspective.

Many states have eavesdropping statutes. And this means I have to insert the normal caveat here: This WILL vary wildly from state to state. But in general terms, eavesdropping statutes govern whether you can record a conversation without the consent of some or all of the participants to the conversation.

While most people get their dash cams so they record the view through their windshield, dash cams often record audio from inside the passenger compartment as well. In Michigan, courts have ruled that a person can record a conversation to which they are a party regardless of the other parties to the conversation knowing or giving consent in advance. So, if you have a dash cam in your own car and it is recording while you drive, you have no problem since you are a "party" to any conversation going on in your car.

The issue arises when you are not in your car. Like when you drop off your supercar for minor warranty work and leave it in the hands of professionals for the day. If your dash cam records a conversation between people in the car that you are not a part of, it would be considered "eavesdropping" in many states. Eavesdropping statutes often carry harsh penalties: In Michigan it is a felony, carrying possible prison time and a steep fine. As an attorney, I advise you to avoid eavesdropping.

There are a couple of points to be made here, however. The obvious one is that all of these statutes tend to address "conversation." As in, people talking. If the dash cam is only recording video but no audio, you would be fine. Does the camera have a mute function? If so, mute it when you will not be in the car.

If you didn't mute the recording and got some juicy footage–including audio–of your car being thrashed, you might still have some decent defenses. The obvious one is that the camera is in plain sight. Did the miscreants really not know what the dash cam was doing while they were beating on your car? If the recording was not secret, then it might not be considered eavesdropping.

It might also help you that the people abusing your car are likely breaking the law. [Fun fact: The authorization I signed to let you test drive my car did not give you permission to joy ride in it. And I HAVE litigated that issue before.] Courts often look askance at people who come before them with unclean hands, asking for help. "He eavesdropped on me while I was whipping his car!"

Of all of the cases I've seen so far–and I've seen a few–I have yet to see someone get in trouble for "eavesdropping" in their own car. But, it is just something I need to point out. I'm sure we'll hear of it one of these days. In the meantime, mute the microphone on the camera when you drop the car off – just in case. The footage will be just as funny without sound.

Here's even more that you need to know about dashcams:

IMPORTANT & URGENT
TECH INFO FOR
C5 - C6 & C7 OWNERS WHO STORE THEIR CARS

If you store your C5, C6 or C7 Corvettes for the winter/summer or whenever, you should watch this video from Paul Koerner, a GM World Class Technician who can be found wrenching on Corvettes at Jackson Chevrolet in Middletown, CT.

In the video, Paul highlights Chevrolet engineering’s recommendations for storing C5, C6 and C7 Corvettes with only a quarter tank of gas. And to demonstrate why, Paul is showing a fuel system out of a 2014 Corvette with the emphasis on the fuel level module that includes the float, fuel sending unit, and fuel pump.

When you store your later model Corvette with a full tank of fuel, Paul shows how the sending unit sensor card contact point on the float would actually be submerged in fuel. That’s not an issue with normal driving because the sending unit float moving up and down helps keep the contacts clean. However, should it remain submerged over long storage periods, sulfur contaminants in the fuel can change the resistance of the sending card, causing issues with the fuel system.

The reason why most people were taught to fill up their tanks before a long-term storage would be to keep moisture out of the fuel tank. Paul then shows how the Corvette fuel system is a closed system designed to keep moisture out and that’s why you can store your Corvette with just a quarter tank of fuel.

Sulfur contaminated fuel level sensors due to storing Corvette with a full tank can happen and create huge expense, so do NOT STORE your C5/C6/C7 with more than a 1/4 tank of fuel. Let’s see why!!!

As you may know, starting with the C5 Corvettes and continuing through C7, the Corvettes utilized a “saddle bag” design for the fuel tanks and you can see in the video what a pain it is to remove them. So take Paul’s advice and if you store your Corvette for an extended amount of time, make sure it only has a quarter tank of fuel!
